Continuing Care
As of March 31, 2014 Roman Sus from Health Facilities Planning Branch said there were 14,370 long-term beds in service in Alberta.
There were 8,497 designated supportive living beds in Alberta. Designated supportive living beds are operated or contracted by Alberta Health Services (AHS) and can charge residents accommodation charges up to the amounts stipulated in Section 3 of the Nursing Homes Regulation AR 258/85.
There were also 20,138 private (non-publicly funded) supportive living beds in the province. These supportive living facilities do not have service agreements with AHS, and AHS does not place residents in these facilities. The accommodationcharges are usually significantly higher.
Long-term care is for those whom require 24-hour nursing care. In 2008, there were 14,500 people in long-term care in Alberta at any one time.
Health Care
As of 2013-2014, Roman Sus said patients in acute care hospitals that were assessed as requiring Alternate Level of Care (ALC) spent an average of 29 days in the acute care hospital waiting for placement in a continuing care facility.
1 in 11 of Canada’s seniors has Alzheimer’s disease or dementia. It is projected to increase by 50% in the next 5 years. According to the Alzheimer Society in 2009, Alberta has the highest number of early onset dementia (17,000).
Transportation
