A Practical Approach to Reducing or Stopping Unnecessary Medication

Presenter:  Wendy Armstrong

Are you worried about the number of medications you or an older family member may be taking?

Medications can improve the lives of people who suffer from chronic conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, cancer, mental illness and chronic pain.  However, taking too many prescription medications (as well as some over-the-counter medications) can be risky, particularly in older people.

  • 2 out of 3 Canadians over the age of 65 take at least 5 different prescription medications.
  • 1 out of 4 Canadians over the age of 65 take at least 10 different prescriptions.

The Canadian Deprescribing Network is an organization dedicated to raising awareness of medication safety, deprescribing and safer alternatives to risky medications.

Learn more about why and how to approach your doctor about lessening your medication load as well as valuable resources in this presentation by Wendy Armstrong.

NOTE:  Never stop or make changes to your medication without consulting your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist.
